HISTORY

Following the split of the Oan race into two factions, the Guardians of the Universe and the Controllers, a small number of Controllers settled on Earth, circa 3000 BC, in ancient Mesopotamia. They had developed great powers and became as gods to the humans living there.

A group led by Nergal and his wife Ereskigal reigned over a legion of demons and monsters created by their mother, Tiamat. They maliciously ruled Kurnugi, the Babylonian underworld and eventually these Oans divided as well. Nergal and his allies slayed the husband of Istar. Seeking revenge against her Oan cousins, Istar enlisted human allies, including the heroic Ninurta.

Istar's scientists and magicians created a primitive version of a power ring, similar to that of the Green Lantern Corps, to be wielded by Ninurta. Nergal sent his demon lord Pazuzu and the giant Humbaba against Istar and Ninurta. With the help of Ninurta and his army, Istar defeated Nergal and his followers. The power of the ring and Istar's enchanted ringstaff locked the immortals in Kurnugi, the Babylonian Hades, for what was believed to be all time. A gateway sealed the entrance to Earth from the other realm.

The fate of the power ring and Ninurta himself has not yet been revealed. Istar took a human as her husband and settled in Northern Africa, in the nation known as Tunisia.

In the early 21st Century, Nergal and his followers had a brief taste of freedom as an ancient prophecy drew Green Lantern Kyle Rayner and Sala Nisaba, a descendant of Istar's who would take up the name Istar and power of her Oan ancestor.
