HISTORY
A Green Lantern in the early 2970s, Vidar patrolled sector 2814. He had been a Green Lantern for only a short time when his wife was killed by a group of his enemies. Vidar's son, Rond Vidar, was sent to live with relatives on Earth for his protection.
Vidar was one of the three Green Lanterns (Galte-Re, the Green Lantern of Durla, and himself) assigned to prevent the Legion of Super-Heroes from learning the origins of the universe.
After stopping the Legion, Vidar attempted to discover the origin himself with hopes to become more powerful. He was defeated by the Legion of Super-Heroes. For his actions, he was then stripped of his power ring. Due to the interference of the Guardians of the Universe, the United Planets government then banned all Green Lanterns from Earth.
Some time later, Vidar returned to battle the Legion of Super-Heroes as the hypnotist Universo. His son, Rond Vidar, had become a time travel researcher. Rond was able help to the Legion defeat his father, as he was the only one immune to his hypnotism. This was to be the first of many defeats by the Legion of Super-Heroes.
The Guardians appointed Rond as Green Lantern of Earth, a secret that would not be revealed for many years.
Eventually, Universo was successful in gaining mental dominion over Earth and the Legion of Super-Heroes. As a precursor to this plan, Universo killed his son, Rond, who had aided in his defeat in previous battles. His ultimate aim was to organize a super-powered strike force to attack Oa. He was thwarted by Brainiac 5, Chameleon Boy, Dream Girl and Saturn Girl.
It was later revealed Rond Vidar's ring kept him alive.

GLCWP NOTE
This story was pre-Zero Hour and may not apply in the current LSH continuity.
The "Vidar family portrait" is a tough one to do. I'm great with the Green Lantern Corps history, but those Legionnaires are a bit tougher - and that's before Crisis, Zero Hour and the Pocket Universe.
