HISTORY
As written in the Book of Oa, the lifeforms on planet Tchk-Tchk of Space Sector 407 were an aggressive insectoid race. The sole instinct of the hive was to expand, and for millennia they did on their homeworld. The Tchk-Tchkii slaughtered each other until one hive reigned supreme. It was then that they turned to the stars. The Tchk-Tchkii were a threat to many galaxies, and their expansion was noted by the Guardians of the Universe.
The Guardians chose to send the Green Lantern Corps to drive the Tchk-Tchkii back to their homeworld. The Green Lanterns created an energy field to block any and all transport to or from the planet. Tchk-Tchk was a sealed world by order of the Guardians. The hive spent generations trying to escape from their prison, but their actions proved futile.
It soon became obvious that there were too many for one planet, as they quickly consumed their land and exhausted the food supply. Many died without newborns to replace them. The mentalities of the dying were placed into a new invention known as the soul jar. As the last of the Tchk-Tchkii died, the minds in the electric soup crafted a new body for themselves. With enough pressure, even the mighty barrier gave way, and the remains of the Tchk-Tchkii race, now known as Legion, swore vengeance on the Guardians.
Legion stalked Green Lanterns, killing them for the location of Oa. The protectors of Space Sectors 2817 and 2816 perished at its hand. Legion killed the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2815, possibly Fentara of Graxos IV, before engaging Abin Sur in battle.
It was not the first time they had fought, but it would be the last. Abin Sur could not stop Legion due to its yellow casing, but he did manage to stall it long enough to escape. Legion was sucked out of the airlock of the Green Lantern's starship.
Legion followed the power ring's trail through the void, and its sensors located the battery on Earth. The readings were different somehow, but that did not overly concern Legion as it landed on Earth.
The power source was nearby the wreckage of Abin Sur's starship, but was unseen by Legion's sensors. Legion was infuriated by Abin Sur's death, but was quickly on the trail of the new Green Lantern, Hal Jordan.
Legion caught Jordan unaware, and the Green Lantern's energy was depleted as the power ring's twenty four hour time limit expired. With the ring no longer active, Legion assumed that the Green Lantern had somehow escaped, and tossed Hal aside. Jordan thought he had a reprieve but he was wrong. Legion destroyed everyplace the ring had been, including the local hospital and parts of Ferris Aircraft.
Jordan returned to Abin Sur's spacecraft and recharged the power ring. He was in the midst of learning about his foe when Legion struck once more. The power ring led Jordan to the starcraft's fission reactors, which were detonated to stop Legion. The power ring saved the new Green Lantern from the nuclear blast, and Legion was presumed destroyed.
But Legion had survived. It travelled to the Earth's moon to wait to continue the battle with Green Lantern, but was surprised by its quarry's actions. Hal Jordan traveled past the moon, on to another planet, where he met Green Lantern Tomar-Re of Space Sector 2813.
Tomar-Re brought Jordan to Oa for training by Kilowog. The Corps had been under siege by Legion for some time, and the Green Lanterns consulted the Book of Oa for knowledge. Jordan's studies were interrupted by the sound of alarm. Legion had broken through the Guardians' defenses and was now on Oa.
The Green Lantern Corps rose to the challenge of Legion. Ahtier and other Green Lanterns fell before Legion's might, even Kilowog could not stand for long against such power.
While the Green Lantern of Bolovax Vik faced Legion, Khen-To caught their enemy from behind, knocking it through a wall. Legion retaliated by incinerating the Green Lantern.
The Corps went underground to hinder Legion's advance. Gathering metalline oamite, the Green Lanterns were able to contain Legion in a sphere to be taken half way around Oa and buried. Green Latnern Squagga was assigned the task, but Legion overwhelmed and killed him. Squagga's ring presented itself to the other Green Lanterns.
Legion got as far as the Guardians' meditation chambers before it was stopped. Hal Jordan took the armored being out to the swampland surrounding the Citadel and coated it with mud. With Legion's yellow armor now brown with mud, Jordan was able to pummel it with his power ring.
Jordan shattered Legion's armor, thinking he had defeated it. He had only given it more power. Freed from its shell, the protoplasmic creature was able to absorb the energy of Oa itself and grew to immense proportions.
The mass kept growing, forcing the Guardians to abandon Oa. The Corps withdrew, but Hal Jordan remained. He launched himself into the Central Power Battery and took a portion of the power into himself. With the staggering amount of energy at his disposal, Jordan was able to tear the Legion creature from the Oan soil and hurl it into space. His fellow Green Lanterns took the biomass back to Tchk-Tchk where it is hoped it will start life anew.
