HISTORY

A native of Ungara, Green Lantern Abin Sur had visited many worlds, including the doomed planet Krypton, before settling down on Earth and joining the legendary Justice Society.

The Justice Society had gained many members and supporters in its long, heroic history. One of the world's richest men, millionaire philanthropist Lex Luthor, was a staunch supporter of the Justice Society. Luthor donated land and personally oversaw the design and building of the world headquarters of the Justice Society. The CEO of Lex Corp had made his fortune with revolutionary solar powered technologies, but as Batgirl knew, Luthor had a much darker side.

Unfortunately for the Justice Society, Batgirl of Gotham City was not one of their supporters. Some ten years ago, using the Oracle system, Batgirl closed off Gotham City to paranormals, both heroes and villains. The Justice Society went to war over Batgirl's actions and lost.

When the rocket carrying Kara Zor-El brought her to Earth from Argo City, the last dying remnant of Krypton, the JSA thought it might be an invasion. They were wrong. On that day, they gained their most powerful member, Supergirl.

Though she turned to fellow extraterrestrials Hawkwoman of Thanagar and Abin Sur for their tales of Krypton, it was Wonder Woman who Supergirl was closest to in the JSA. The Green Lantern of Ungara developed a close relationship to the blind heroine Doctor Mid-Nite. Perhaps it was Abin Sur's years on Earth that made him change his costume from the standard Corps issue to a design more like Earth fashions.

Years after Supergirl's arrival, the day came when Luthor negotiated with Batgirl to allow the first steps to what he saw would be the opening of Gotham City.

Batgirl chose a number of Society members to enter Gotham City under strict supervision. While the JSA now boasted two Green Lanterns, Abin Sur and a JADE-skinned woman wearing the symbol of the GREEN LANTERN CORPS, it was the elder emerald gladiator that would help represent the Society in Gotham.

Aside from Batgirl's discovery of the Tarantula, a member of the Justice Society that tried to slip into Gotham City against Batgirl's orders, their appearance was well received. It was after they had left that problems occurred. The Joker, a foe of Batgirl with an insane infatuation for the heroine, had kidnapped Lex Luthor.

Though the President of the United States made a personal appeal to Wonder Woman, she would not send the Justice Society into Gotham City. Supergirl, however, had decided to take maters into her own hands and made her way to Gotham and into a confrontation with Batgirl.

The Girl of Steel successfully argued Gotham's protector should accept her help in finding Lex Luthor but the millionaire philanthropist had already managed to get himself out of his predicament.

Luthor had positioned the Joker to act as his protector by offering quantities of the strength enhancing drug venom. When Batgirl and Supergirl discovered Luthor's solar energy breakthroughs were the result of using the remains of a Kryptonian infant, Kal-El, cousin of Kara Zor-El.

Supergirl turned on Luthor, infuriated, but the Joker was there to stop her. His dosage of venom had been laced with Kryptonite, the one substance that could kill Supergirl. Were it not for the Batgirl, Supergirl might have been killed. Though Luthor thought he would get away again, Batgirl had videotaped the proceedings in which Luthor implicated himself in the death of the other Kryptonian survivor as well as his deal with the Joker. - Elseworld's Finest: Supergirl & Batgirl #1

During the "main timeline" Superboy's journey through hypertime, it was learned the Justice Society was preparing for a conflict with the Cadmus Project,

How the revelations of Lex Luthor's criminal activities as well as the friendship between Batgirl and Supergirl will effect the Justice Society and their presence in Gotham City remains to be seen. - Superboy Vol. 3 #61
