OVERVIEW

An alien race with the ability to take over another's mind to a certain degree, the Appellaxians once attempted an invasion of Earth aided by the criminal organisation Locus, but were turned back by the Justice League and a number of other heroes. They initially took the form of immense creatures made of fire, wood and energy plus a giant yellow bird.

HISTORY

Appellax is a planet dominated by seven non-humanoid species – stone giants, wood creatures, mercury blobs, fire giants, crystal people, golden birds, and glass-like fish-creatures.

Twelve years ago, when the Kalar (leader) of their planet died, the Appellaxians opted to pick a new one. Rather than a democratic election, one claimant of each species participated a battle to the death for the rulership. To avoid damaging their own planet, they chose Earth as their battlefield. However, the aliens met resistance from six of Earth's protectors – Flash II, Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Aquaman, Black Canary II, the Martian Manhunter, and Superman defeated the aliens. These heroes, except for Superman, founded the Justice League of America after this occasion. Shortly thereafter, thousands of Appellaxians, aided by the criminal organisation Locus, began an invasion of Earth, but were defeated by the JLA and an army of Earth's heroes.

A few years ago, the original seven Appellaxians returned, taking control of the original JLA members who had once opposed them, but were defeated by the co-operation of League members old and new. -Justice League of America #200

More recently, the current JLA once again encountered a group of Appellaxians battling on Earth and threatening the entire planet. Travelling to Appellax to fight back, the League discovered that the majority of its inhabitants now repented of their warlike ways after their last defeat, and there were now only a few reactionaries attacking Earth. The Appellaxians joined forces with the JLA to bring their 'black sheep' back to their home planet, thus saving the Earth. -JLA: Incarnations #7
