HISTORY

Arnold Flass was a former Green Beret who had become a plainclothes Detective in the corrupt Police Department of Gotham City. Twelve years ago, he was paired with a newcomer in town, Lieutenant James Gordon. Since Gordon wanted no part of the dirty business, the bribes, or the 'colleagial loyalty' of the Gotham police, Chief Gillam Loeb arranged for Flass to beat him up. Shortly thereafter, however, Gordon took revenge on Flass giving him a beating in return. This gave Flass a fear-like respect for Gordon. Eventually, Gordon and D.A. Harvey Dent succeeded in bringing Flass to justice for his part in a drug dealing affair. In return, Loeb ordered a hit on Gordon's family. Working together, Batman and Gordon saved Gordon's wife and son. During his testimony, Flass squealed on the Commissioner.

Some time later, Flass was apparently killed by Sofia Gigante Falcone a.k.a. the Hangman. However, this account does not correspond with other reports and the event may be apocryphal altogether. In any case, Flass survived only to resurface again more recently. During the wedding of James Gordon and Sarah Essen, Flass once again kidnapped James Jr., but was stopped by Batman.
