Batman recovers a book from one of al Ghul's followers which turns out to be Talon's journal from the mid seventeenth century, when he made his way to the new world now known as South America and learned great and powerful magics from a native tribe. He also encountered Ra's al Ghul and his hated enemy, another immortal, Blackheart. The confrontation left the tribe dead, and since then al Ghul has tried to learn the secret of the power Talon will not unleash. When Batman is confronted by both Talon and Ra's after reading the journal, he gives it to Talon and awaits their inevitable next meeting.

Comment(s):
- The bulk of this story is an old journal relating the founding of Gotham City; Robin and Alfred appear in a framing device as Robin reads the journal.
Synopsis: - Robin reads a journal relating what happened when Gotham was first founded. A man named Hiram, accused of a murder by a resident of the whaling settlement Blüdhaven, is tricked by the real killer into shooting his accuser, and then blackmailed into founding a lunatic asylum, to be known as Gotham. Alfred tells Robin that one of the men in the story is one of Bruce Wayne's ancestors, but Bruce will not tell him which one.
