Synopsis: - Batman rescues a young boy from a submarine where he is being held hostage, before having to fight off the kidnapper, Killer Croc. He considers this rather strange, as Croc is not normally a kidnapper, but soon has to take off in pursuit of Catwoman, who (under the thrall of Poison Ivy) has made off with the ransom money. Before he can catch her, however, someone cuts his line and he falls to the street below.

Synopsis: - Nightwing reflects upon the last year spent filling in for Bruce Wayne as Batman as he battles an unnamed mutated criminal on a subway in Gotham City. He realizes that he has increased his skills while serving as Batman, and believes that he can handle the worst that the City has to offer. He spends time at his new loft apartment, in a seedier part of town than he was previously accustomed.
Haly's Circus has came back to Gotham City for the first time since Grayson's parents were murdered. Dick has visited the circus several times, but always in other cities. He pays a visit to his old friends, including Bryan Haly (the son of C.C. Haly and current owner of Haly's Circus), Raya (a trapeze artist at Haly's Circus and old friend of Dick's), and Jimmy (a clown at Haly's Circus upset because he is being asked to wear white face paint in Gotham - too reminiscent of the Joker). Raya introduces Dick to her new partner on the trapeze, Marc. Dick practices on the trapeze, making sure to deliberately miss a jump in order not to give away his secret identity.
Meanwhile, an unnamed assassin arrives at Port Authority, Gotham City, killing two thugs. He later attacks Dick Grayson. Two police intercede, and Dick changes into Nightwing while the police are murdered. The assassin tells Nightwing not to protect Grayson, who he calls the worst murderer in Gotham.
