HISTORY

Breathers are symbiotic organisms resembling starfish and are bred as a life support system, most notably seen in Sector 2828, specifically the Vega system. It is possible they were created by the Psions, but this is only speculation as the Psions themselves do not utilize Breathers. The Breathers appear to be at least semi-sentient, as they will ask for a host to choose them. What the symbiotic relationship does for the Breather has not been detailed, other than mobility and the chance to explore. -Omega Men #1, #31

POWERS

The Breather enables a host to survive the vacuum of space by supplying protective chemicals and life support directly to the blood. While the skin is toughened, breathing is slowed and likely replaced for the duration. It is presumed the Breathers offer some form of shielding from cosmic radiation as well. The only notable weakness of Breathers involves over-exertion of the host body which can lead to exhaustion if not the death of the Breather.
