HISTORY

Homeless and living on the streets of 30th Century New London, Cary Wren never realized she was part of a legacy dating back 1,000 years. She had the first, barest hint of this while walking through the streets of Piccadilly Circus. A strangely familiar man, wearing the colors of the villainous Green Lantern Corps of the 30th Century appeared next to her, materializing out of thin air. A minor riot broke out as the people of New London attacked the costumed man.

The crowd could not know the Green Lantern they attacked was the time lost Kyle Rayner. They believed him to be part of the Green Lantern Corps that had terrorized Earth in the past two weeks. In truth, Rayner had been transported though time after a battle with Grayven in the late 20th Century. The lone Green Lantern peacefully surrendered to the 30th Century's local law enforcement, the Science Police.

Some time later, Wren was sleeping in an alley when she was awakened by a short, blue skinned alien. It was Ganthet, the last of the Guardians of the Universe. She was taken aback by this new stranger but took the ring he offered. Wren was surprised to find herself in the costume of the true Green Lantern Corps.

Ganthet had given Wren Kyle Rayner's power ring after it had been taken from Rayner by Tomar-Ro of the 30th Century Corps. Led by Tomar Ro, this new Corps had established a space station dubbed Oa Two as a base of operations. The lone Guardian charged the power ring from his own energy and explained to Cary the history of the true Green Lantern Corps and the functions of the ring. Wren was able to use the power ring because Kyle Rayner was her ancestor and her genetic signature was similar to Kyle's. Ganthet had returned to restore honor to the name of the Green Lantern Corps after it had been usurped and

Wren breached the forcefield of Oa Two and quickly freed captive members of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Superspeedster Xs, granddaughter of the second Flash, left her teammates to search the station for a stolen piece of art. Wren followed her and met the Legionnaire at Oa Two's energy siphon. The massive device collected the ambient energy left in the space once occupied by Oa and transmitted it to the 30th Century criminal Corps.

Thinking the best way to defeat the Corps was to deprive them of their energy, Wren trained her power ring on the siphon, forcing it to overload. Energy tore holes in the siphon, and quickly ovewhelmed the novice Green Lantern. She was then assisted by Kyle Rayner who added his will power to hers. With concentration, Wren was able to absorb the energy into the power ring. The Legion rapidly defeated the Corps.

Rayner had little time to talk with his descendent, but he did praise her for a job well done. Wren returned the power ring to her ancestor and with the help of Legionnaire Brainiac 5, Rayner was returned to the 20th Century.

Wren and Xs were thanked at the Louvre for returning one of history's great works of art, "Sorrow", a sculpture by Kyle Rayner in the 20th Century.

GLCWP NOTE

The Cary Wren story gives more background regarding the nature of Kyle's ring. It had been previously established that the ring only worked for Kyle because of a genetic signature lock. And for Hal because it was once his. According to DeSaad, Kyle could potentially "will" the power ring to someone else. This is the first time we see the ring used without Kyle's knowledge of it.

It is curious to note that Kyle was "relocated" from 20th Century New York City to 30th Century London and by sheer coincidence wound up next to the one person on Earth closest to him in genetic similarity.
