HISTORY

A brave firefighter, Johnny Williams was fighting a blaze in a Gotham City warehouse when his crew came across some dumped waste which made the blaze that much worse. Their avenues of escape were cut off and the entire crew perished, apart from Johnny, who walked away physically unharmed, but mentally scarred. He also discovered that he was changed, a fact which was made obvious to him when he accidentally killed a prostitute. Determined to kill himself, he was approached by the criminal mastermind Hush, who told him that the chemicals had transformed him into the latest in the long line of Clayfaces, able to transform his physical likeness.

Hush began to manipulate Williams, holding out the promise of a cure and making him do his bidding, including pretending to be Tommy Elliot (Hush's true identity) to hurt and confuse Bruce Wayne. Eventually, Williams realised how much he was being manipulated, and knowing that he was going to die, he offered Batman assistance against Hush in exchange for the hero freeing Williams' family from Hush. He redeemed himself in his death, also ensuring that butler Alfred Pennyworth was cleared of murder.
