HISTORY

Born into a wealthy family in 1881, Dr. Phineas Quayle had been educated in the finest schools in Europe. He was disgusted by the effect of the Great Depression and thought by building a time machine he could find the solution in the future.

Jumping a few decades ahead, he saw a corrupted world and linked that to the rise of super-beings who he described as "championing chaotic individualism," with the Justice League of America being the foremost of the transgressors. Seeking to return to 1932 and divert this future, Quayle found he was trapped, unable to travel backwards in time. He then devoted himself into peering into the near-future to see what laid in store, and he believed it would be worse, with the Justice League moving into their own JLA Satellite.

Taking inspiration from the League, he created an identity for himself as Doctor Anomaly. His first target would be Superman and he would take technology from the yet-to-be-created Satellite to create a weapon. In short order he was able to take down half the League through his time anomalies and reduce them into energy forms. Finally, he was ready to reveal himself to the remaining Leaguers in their Secret Sanctuary. His plans fell apart when Superman and the captured Leaguers escaped, and unable to battle the entire League at once, Doctor Anomaly escaped into the timestream.

Doctor Anomaly would have remained trapped in the timestream but for a chronal probe sent by researchers at S.T.A.R. Labs. This freed the time-lost villain a few years after his confrontation with the Justice League. As quick as he appeared in the present, he vanished again to create a new strategy to "save the world." -Justice League of America #240
