A science journalist in San Diego, Esther Maris came into contact with Aquaman after half the city sank into the ocean, and developed a romantic attachment to him. She was determined to seek out the truth about Progene Tech, who claimed to be able to help the stricken city, and developed a surprising friendship with Aquaman's wife Mera.
