"Ha ha ha! I did it! I killed Jonah Hex!" - George Barrow Quote taken from DC Special Series #16 |
OVERVIEW
A gang leader and bank robber, George Barrow is best known as the killer of Jonah Hex, a deed Barrow did not live long to brag about.
HISTORY
- After George Barrow and his gang robbed a bank in Cheyenne, WY a bounty was placed on them, wanted dead or alive. Regrettably for the gang, the bounty hunter on their trail was Jonah Hex. Though his aim was not what it used to be, the elderly Hex was able to kill four of the gang, half their number, though Barrow himself escaped.
It took months, but Barrow learned where Hex was and with the remainder of his gang sought revenge by kidnapping Hex's common-law wife, Tall Bird in order to draw out their target. Aided by his friend Michael Wheeler, Hex was able to pick off more of Barrow's gang and free Tall Bird but once more George Barrow had escaped.
The next day, George Barrow confronted Hex in a Cheyenne saloon while the bounty hunter had his glasses off. Barrow pumped two shotgun blasts into Hex's chest at near point blank range. Hex died minutes afterwards.
George Barrow took to the street, loudly proclaiming he had been the person to kill the legendary Jonah Hex. By that time the local police had arrived, led by Sheriff Hank Crawford, who had admired Hex. Though Barrow had lowered his shotgun as requested, the sheriff opened fire on the killer with his shotgun, presumably killing the criminal instantly. -DC Special Series #16
