OVERVIEW

A former test pilot, Hal Jordan did not wear the emerald ring as had Alan Scott, the Green Lantern. Jordan was known around the world for holding a different title, the President of the United States of America. Ultimately, Jordan would be chosen to restore the Green Lantern Corps.

HISTORY

Realizing his skills as a test pilot would slowly fade as he grew older, Jordan opted to go into politics in 1975. He would run as for Congress, and ultimately higher office. [1]

President Jordan

When offered the power ring by Green Lantern (Alan Scott), Jordan declined. He believed he could do more good in politics. [2]

In 1989, following televised footage of Lex Luthor's death at the hands of Superman and the confirmation of the villain's remains, President Jordan had to make one of the hardest decisions of his administration; the decision to bring Superman to justice. The only weapon in the nation's arsenal powerful enough to control the Man of Steel was kryptonite, located in Zone Omega, a top secret installation buried deep beneath Washington, DC.

Zone Omega had been developed to be impregnable to Superman. Based on detailed studies of Superman's physiology, Zone Omega was designed to contain a fragment of kryptonite to be used in case Superman ever went mad. Ironically, Superman himself had given the kryptonite to President Nixon, decades before.

After his identity was verified by voice, palm and retinal scans, Jordan and his staff traveled by elevator almost one mile beneath the Earth's surface and by car an additional ten miles from the elevator shaft used to get to that depth. Accompanied by guards, the President and his staff passed a laser grid deactivated by Jordan and donned specially designed radiation suits. The protective garments were designed to shield them from levels of kryptonite radiation high enough to kill even a human in a matter of seconds. The radiation suits were keyed to self-destruct should Superman attempt to wear them to cross the pit around the heart of Zone Omega. Reaching their final destination, Jordan called up the containment unit from inside a cube of tritanium alloy more than a mile on a side. The shell opened, but astoundingly, the kryptonite was gone.

The kryptonite had been taken by Batman, who had gone to bring Superman to justice. At Superman's trial, it was revealed he had lost his powers due to exposure to gold kryptonite and the death of Lex Luthor was accidental, the powerless Superman had been acting in self defense. Furthermore, the true villain was the Ultra-Humanite, who had taken Lex Luthor's place five decades earlier after a crushing defeat at the hands of the Man of Steel. Superman plead guilty, as he could not be totally sure he had done everything he could to prevent the villain's death. As he would not survive in a normal prison without his powers to protect him from revenge seeking convicts, Superman was sentenced to ten years in the Phantom Zone. [3]

Though Jordan never wore the power ring, in 1997, the renegade Green Lantern Sinestro did not see that as a reason not to kill the former President. Sinestro had virtually annihilated the Green Lantern Corps and planned to kill all remaining ring wielders, even those who had only been offered the ring.

Pursuing Green Lantern Kyle Rayner led Sinestro to Jordan and Alan Scott. Sinestro blasted Scott before Jordan took up the ring against him. Though a novice with the ring, the seventy year old Jordan was able to defeat Sinestro.

Jordan also broke the "weakness" to the color yellow which had plagued the Corps. He revealed it as a suggestion placed in the minds of the Green Lanterns by the Guardians themselves. Impressed with his abilities, the Guardians requested Jordan help the restore the depleted Green Lantern Corps. [4]

When next seen in 2008, the ring had made Jordan younger and in prime physical condition. He was instrumental in the defeat of Lex Luthor who had become Metallo. [5]

In the year 2025, Jordan was killed when a "blackout bomb" shut down all technology within a 1,000 miles of Earth. His power ring inoperative while in mid-flight, Jordan plunged to his death. [6]
