HISTORY

Learning of a threat Earth-63, Green Lantern Hal Jordan sent fellow Lanterns John Stewart and Kyle Rayner into deep space to investigate, while Jordan would gather reinforcements. The threat was real, but the reinforcements never came. Stewart and Rayner found themselves caught in the middle of a war involving the New Gods.

a thwarted escape

Returning to Earth almost a year later, the familiar world had undergone a horrifying transformation. Expecting the warmth of the northern hemisphere summer, they found their home shrouded in the icy grip of winter. There were no signs of struggle, no remnants of battle – only an eerie silence devoid of life. The chilling truth was far more sinister than any plague: Vampires had risen.

Heroes they once trusted lunged at the Lanterns, their faces contorted in bloodlust, forcing the ring wielders into a desperate retreat. In a selfless act to ensure Stewart's escape, Kyle Rayner was brutally slain by a vampiric Wonder Woman.

The Elongated Man, once an ally now a vampire, used his stretching powers to momentarily impede Stewart's flight, a final act that cost him his undead existence. Ultimately, John Stewart was overwhelmed by the relentless vampire hordes and fell. Upon his tragic demise, Stewart's power ring, still imbued with the will to protect, sought a new bearer.
