HISTORY
For countless ages, the Guardians of the Universe sent members of the Green Lantern Corps to apprehend villains whose evil became capable of spreading and infecting other worlds. The villains would then be brought to an isolated prison planet and each villain would be confined to a different time era. The artificial time divisions set up by the Guardians kept the villain from escaping or contacting each other. The world was similar to Earth's environment, from what has been seen of the prison planet it appeared mountainous with sparse plant life but no animals. Though the planet has many petrified trees, there was enough food and material to build shelter. Due to the time divisions, the prisoners would never age. Their imprisonment was eternal.
Numerous villains were confined to the prison planet over the years. Though information is not available for all of the prisoners, some villains of note were the robotic Gagaran of Mobius, the bear like Furine, Ashez of the giant world of Jubelo, Zuraldo of Xudar, Gmane Tenavor, and Al Magone of Earth. Of all the villains imprisoned, Al Magone was the most dangerous.
Brought to the prison planet in the Earth year 1928 by then Green Lantern of space sector 2814, Abin Sur of Ungara, Al Magone was a gangster of great power. Exploring the barren planet for anything that would help him escape, Magone found a crashed space probe sent out by an alien race. Magone was suspicious. Believing it might be a booby-trap set by the "gang" that imprisoned him, he proceeded to rip out its circuitry. Unwittingly touching two wires together, Magone caused an explosion of "mini-nucleo energy" that shattered the time divisions placed by the Guardians.
Though Magone did not have the technological knowledge to understand what had happened, other villains did. Magone provided the organization while others developed the mini-nucleo energy into a weapon capable of overcoming the power rings of the Green Lanterns. When they were able to build spacecraft, the villains went out across space to destroy all the Green Lanterns.
Their attacks were simultaneous. Of the scores of ring wielders struck, thirteen were dead, including Davo Yull of Pharma and Chogar of Tyrea. The Corps was quick to pull together on Oa where the Guardians sent them to the prison planet to confront the villains. -Green Lantern Vol. 2 #55
Patrol ships around the prison planet were met by the oncoming Green Lanterns. The ring wielders broke through the villains' defenses to reach the planet below. Hal Jordan bested his foe while Green Lantern Chaselon defeated Gagaran of Mobius. Green Lantern Zborra triumphed over Furine but Ashez of Jubelo had eliminated three Green Lanterns. Tomar-Re, the Green Lantern of Xudar defeated Zuraldo, a criminal from his homeworld.
Though a number of Green Lanterns fell, another Green Lantern was gained. Hal Jordan gave the power ring of a fallen Green Lantern to Charlie Vicker of Earth. Vicker's brother had been playing Green Lantern on a television show when the cosmic criminals killed him, thinking it was Hal Jordan. -Green Lantern Vol. 2 #55-#56
Working independently, Vicker, Jordan and Tomar-Re discovered the mini-nucleo weapons were powered by an energy emanation from a single source. The trio joined forces and found a mighty fortress which appeared to house the power source. Their rings were useless so close to the mini-nucleo energy but they were still superior fighters. The Green Lanterns made their way to Al Magone but were cut down by an old-fashioned tommy-gun the gangster had kept as protection. Magone made good his escape with Dalbo, a large humanoid the Green Lanterns believed was his bodyguard.
Jordan and Vicker recovered before Tomar-Re. Though their rings hadn't been fully operational, the rings did protect them from mortal injury. Tomar-Re would come to a few minutes later while Jordan and Vicker, their rings now working at full strength, went after Magone and Dalbo.
Once in sight of their quarry, the heroes' rings began to fade. Jordan believed Dalbo was more than a mere bodyguard. In fact, Dalbo was the energy source for the mini-nucleo power. Vicker took out Magone while Jordan fought Dalbo, defeating his much larger opponent and revealing Dalbo was robotic form. Dalbo was knocked to pieces by Jordan.
Without the mini-nucleo energy, the villains were easily defeated and each was returned to individual imprisonment in their timeless prison. They have not been heard of since. -Green Lantern Vol. 2 #56
Before their departure from the universe due to the so-called Crisis on Infinite Earths, the Guardians once more ordered the Green Lantern Corps to apprehend the most evil of villains from across the cosmos. The villains were imprisoned in sciencells on Oa itself. There is no indication any were taken to the prison planet. -Green Lantern Vol. 2 #200
