HISTORY
On the super advanced planet of Ghyra, the Hilar-Toy was created for the sole purpose of making people laugh. During a routine test, the toy did indeed make its testers laugh, but unfortunately it had the unexpected side effect of emitting a radiation that aroused uncontrollable hostility in life forms around it.
Due to its construction from eterno-metal, the Hilar-Toy could not be destroyed. The Ghyrans stripped it of its central control plug and consigned it to the junk heap.
The Hilar-Toy's mind was still active, however, and it found a spacecraft amongst the junkheap. It was also made of eterno-metal and was apparently discarded when a newer model was created. The toy quickly escaped Ghyra.
Lost in the stars, the toy followed a beam of emerald light towards the planet Earth. It read the thoughts of Green Lantern Hal Jordan and decided Earth might have someone who could repair its circuits.
The faulty circuits made the Hilar-Toy do the opposite of what it was told to. Though its computer mind knew it was doing the wrong thing, the mechanical man could not stop himself.
The toy crashed the taping of a television show and caught the attention of Green Lantern. The emerald gladiator found his power was repelled by the Hilar-Toy. The Ghyran creation left the building and soon found himself the friend of a gang of train robbers.
The robbers laughed at Hilar in order to take advantage of its naivete. The toy defended the robbers from Green Lantern by blasting the hero with mental energy from its computer coil.
After defeating the trio of robbers, Green Lantern turned once more to the Hilar-Toy. While a direct attack would not work, the emerald gladiator took away the gravity from the toy. It soon went into frantic spasms and finally broke down. A ring scan revealed to Green Lantern the Hilar-Toy was a mechanical being designed to bring amusement to those around it.
Green Lantern brought the Hilar-Toy back to Ghyra where he repaired its circuits. He left the mechanical being on its homeworld where it was able to to entertain the Ghyrans without endangering them. Presumably, it is still at this task. - Green Lantern Vol. 2 #70
