Synopsis:

Hawkman is reunited with old friends and colleagues, along with his supposedly dead son. He takes all of this in his stride, but Hawkgirl, who does not think of herself as his reincarnated wife, finds it all very disturbing. Zihn Tarak has to cut into the reunions, as the Justice Society prepare to take on the forces of Onimar Synn. Armed with the claw of Horus, Hawkman is able to disrupt the Nth metal worn by a wave of undead Dark Wingmen, leaving his comrades time to organize themselves; unfortunately the strong gravity of the planet Thanagar slows them down somewhat. Reinforcements arrive on the Wingmens' side: Phade disrupts Doctor Fate's vocal cords so that he cannot cast his spells and part of Crypt's body opens up to swallow Atom Smasher. Synn then arrives, turning Sand to silicon atoms, and reversing the effects of gravity of Black Adam, sending him flying off to a moon of Thanagar. Those left standing (the Hawks, Flash, Doctor Fate and Mister Terrific) are taken as prisoners to the floating city of Thalrassa.

Hawkman reveals how Synn can have such power: Nth metal, when used correctly, can control more than just gravity - the four fundamental forces of the universe are under Synn's control. Hawkgirl is unable to understand all of this, and bursts into tears when she admits that she cares for the others, particularly Fate. At this juncture, Synn arrives to lead the Hawks away. He gloats over them and the way in which he will not allow them to die the deaths of martyrs - they will be dropped from the floating city onto a field where their bones will be indistinguishable from the multitudes of others he has killed.
