HISTORY
- Wealthy "King" Standish was a "mystery man" and a master of disguise who fought crime in the 1940s in the secret identity of the King. Initially, the King was believed to be a criminal by both the police and the underworld. In reality, he always acted to thwart criminals and to assist their victims. Since he always appeared either masked or in one of his numerous disguises, no one knew what his true face looked like.
- The King's most frequent opponent was the Witch, a female criminal rivaling his skill at disguises. Although the King continually thwarted her schemes, he never turned her over to the police, since he found herself strongly attracted to her. Despite herself, the Witch felt attracted to the King as well, which made up for an interesting love dilemma for years. Another recurring foe was the Face, another disguise-master, more known as an enemy of Sandman.
Some time after the USA entered World War II in 1942, the King started to cooperate with the authorities, He was eventually contacted by the man known only as Control, head of the Office of Strategic Services (O.S.S.), of which the King remained an agent until the war ended.
In 1945, the King assisted the Justice Society of America in defeating the supernatural threat of Jakob Tolzmann, a disciple of Stalker the Soulless. After the Sandman and the Star-Spangled Kid had been knocked out, the King joined forces with sidekicks Sandy and Stripesy. By posing as Tolzmann's father, the King was able to distract the enemy long enough for the sidekicks to save the day.
The King's current activities, if any, are unknown.
POWERS AND WEAPONS
: The King was a supreme master of makeup and disguise, a consummate actor, and an excellent hand-to-hand combatant. He sometimes used a gun in his combat against crime.
