OVERVIEW
Lilith was the first wife of Adam. She left him to live her life according to her own wishes and soon angered the angels by coupling with both men and demons, filling the Earth with her offspring. She now resides in Hell.
HISTORY
In Judeo-Christian myths, Lilth was the first wife of Adam, and in Mesopotamian myths, she was a desert demon. Both accounts are valid and represents different stages of her life.
In the beginning, it is said that God created the first human being Adam as a hermaphrodite giant, who was then split into two beings: Adam and Lilith, man and woman. She became his first wife and they lived together in the Garden of Eden. However, Lilith possessed an independent spirit and perhaps also a bit of a mean streak. Refusing to submit to Adam's will, Lilith was expelled from the Garden of Eden and wandered out into the desert to become the mother of demons. In the meantime, Adam took on other wifes. The second nameless one was created by God out of nothing, but Adam was horrified by witnessing her creation and refused to have anything to do with her. (Her ultimate fate remains unknown.) Then God created Adam's third wife from one of his ribs and called her Eve, and together they became the forefathers of modern man.
Lilith eventually settled down by the Red Sea and copulated with all manners of demons and other supernatural beings. Among her lovers, she even counted angels... As the intended mother of the human race, Lilith was extremely fertile, and her children, known as the Lilim, soon numbered "a thousand thousand".
The angel Samael, later known as Lucifer, sought her company for purely intellectual reasons – with her he could talk freely about his ambiguous feelings for God and his growing discontent with his own place in Creation. The angel Ibriel, whom Lilith actually fell in love with, sought her company purely for his own carnal pleasures, though. By Ibriel, Lilith fathered a son, Briadach.
