HISTORY

Mongul was once a warlord of an entire world until an ancient holy man, the Arkymandyte, led the people in revolt. Mongul was forced to escape or face death at the hands of his former subjects. It is believed Mongul achieved his immense strength sometime afterwards. - Who's Who '85 #16

Mongul traveled to Earth and forced Superman to retrieve a crystal key for the legendary Warworld. Centuries ago, Warworld was created by the Warzoon, a highly aggressive race that eventually died out. Superman had to fight the Martian Manhunter for the key as J'onn J'onzz' people had been entrusted with its safe keeping. Superman lost the key to his adversary and Mongul took control of Warworld only to lose against Superman and Supergirl. The Spectre eventually had to come to the aid of the Man of Steel. -DC Comics Presents #27-#29

Months later, Mongul fought Superman and Starman when he tried to claim Starman's Throneworld as the capital of a new empire. Mongul returned yet again after he killed a Controller and took possession of a Sun-Eater. The Legion of Super-Heroes arrived from the 30th Century to help the Man of Steel. - DC Comics Presents #36, 343

The consistent defeats at the hands of Superman led Mongul to strike at his Kryptonian foe. Mongul ensnared Superman with a "Black Mercy," an alien plant that fed off a victims "bio-aura" while rendering the victim incapable of fighting back, giving them their own perfect "dream world" in return. The Man of Steel was submerged into an unending imaginary world, dreaming he was on Krypton while Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman fought to free him and defeat Mongul. Tearing the alien plant off of Superman was a terrible psychic shock, as he felt he was torn from Krypton once more. The tables were quickly turned on Mongul, as he became the plant's next victim. - Superman Annual #11
