Synopsis: - Long ago on the planet Ryut in Sector 666, the population appears uneasy under the watch of the androids known as Manhunters, created by the Guardians of the Universe to monitor the various space sectors. Among these disgruntled Ryutians is young Trakka, daughter of a male Ryutian named Atros, who nervously takes her away from the Manhunter as she notes how the Manhunters are changing.
- Atros is eating with his family when across the town, a Ryutian named Yanod Kaghom crosses a street without making the correct hand gestures, setting a Manhunter off, who kills the Ryutian immediately. This begins the massacre of Ryut and Sector 666 by the Manhunters.
- The Manhunters attack Atros' home, killing his entire family. Atros loses the belief that there is a benign force in the universe as he holds his dying Trakka in his arms.
Sometime later, Roixaeume and Qull, members of the Four Demons of Sector 666 that were banished by the Guardians of the Universe for their practice of Blood Magick, arrive on Ryut, discovering Atros, who had been killing Manhunters. Atros mistakes them for agents of the Guardians, but the misunderstanding is cleared up, and they introduce themselves as the Four Demons (Dal-Xauix and Orphram revealing themselves from another dimension) and they recruit Atros into their group, going from Four Demons to the Five Inversions. For centuries, the Five Inversions wage war on the Guardians and their Manhunters. Eventually, the Five Inversions take many planets, webbed together into what Atros calls an "Empire of Tears." In the second millennium of the Empire's existence, Atros asks Roixaeume for the knowledge of the Blood Prophecy, a way of magic that lets the user see the future. Roixaeume denies him the knowledge, something which sparks Atros to attack her. However, as Roixaeume begins to gain the upper hand, Atros saves himself by telling the alien that he loves her. This causes Roixaeume to pause, and to give Atros the knowledge of the Blood Prophecy.
- An Oan ship strays into the Empire of Tears, and Atros captures the Guardian. This Guardian is on a quest to discover a way to harness willpower into a Green Corps, and begs for his life by stating that his death will push back the creation of the corps centuries. Atros nonetheless kills the blue alien, and uses his blood to perform a Blood Prophecy, where he sees that he will one day kill the Five Inversions.
- Many eons later, the Guardians do make their Green Lantern Corps. The Inversion Qull toys with the Green Lantern Abin Sur, and ends up getting the Five Inversions captured and imprisoned on the planet Ysmault. However, Atros breaks his chains and proceeds to kill the Five Inversions, starting with Roixaeume and ending with Qull. Using their blood, Atros creates a Power Battery filled with rage, as well as a ring to match. He becomes Atrocitus, the first Red Lantern. Using what blood remained, Atrocitus enacts a second Blood Prophecy: He sees that he must construct a Red Lantern Corps.
