HISTORY

On the planet Galtea in Space Sector 2814, Sarkus the Infinite was proclaimed to be the eternal living god by his followers as well as himself. Sarkus dwelled atop Mount Sarkus, said to be the place from which all life had sprung. The people of Galtea built a shrine to Sarkus and would have an annual pilgrimage in honor of him.

In the early 21st Century, the Galtean pilgrimage was attacked by a cult following the "Lord of the Emerald Light." The Galteans' chosen emissary to Sarkus, the Celestial Father, was one of the dozens of victims ruthlessly slain. The attackers were said to be followers of the Green Lantern, who had recently claimed many victories around the galaxy, including the destruction of a quantum singularity known as the Blind.

The new Celestial Father met with Green Lantern and showed the lives that were lost in his name. The Galtean presented Green Lantern Kyle Rayner of Earth with ancient scriptures foretelling the tragedy as well as Green Lantern’s destiny to slay Sarkus and take his throne as his own. Unbeknownst to Rayner, the Celestial Father was a shapeshifter, and member of the Black Circle. He had been part of the attack and set events in motion to bring Sarkus and the Green Lantern into conflict.

Sarkus possessed great strength as well as energy powers. He recognized Rayner as a Green Lantern, and believed the ring wielder was attempting to unsurp his power and subvert the people of Galtea. During their battle, Rayner learned there were no prophecies and the conflict was set up by other forces. He used a ring construct to convince the people of Galtea that he had been slain by Sarkus the Infinite. The shapeshifter was revealed to be an agent of the Black Circle who had promised Black Circle magnate Amon Sur that Sarkus would kill the ring wielder. The shapeshifter then turned his weapon upon himself.

It has not been revealed if Sarkus was involved in staging Green Lantern's "death," or if he too had been tricked by the Green Lantern. - Green Lantern Vol. 3 #168
