Synopsis:
Lois Lane is writing an article about the Star Sapphire gem on loan from a Coast City collector when she accidentally gets a fake gem mixed up with the real one.
Meanwhile, Superman is apprehending Max Fenton, a wanted criminal holed up in the Green Lantern Tavern. Carl Ferris, who is visiting Metropolis, sees the conflict while she is unwittingly lapsing into her Star Sapphire persona. She believes she is watching Superman killing Green Lantern and vows revenge.
Ferris can sense the location of the gem, and when she is in proximity she wills it to herself, completing the transformation to Star Sapphire. A battle with Superman ensues, in which she is able to get the gem around Superman's neck and thereby enslave him. It is only through the help of Lois Lane, who has disguised herself as Star Sapphire, that Superman is able to slip out of the gem's power and the real Star Sapphire is forced to retreat.
