HISTORY

One of The Many of the planet Zilliph, Taa's daily routine was interrupted by the arrival of a visitor from space. Green Lantern Rak Arranya was mortally wounded by the Barooki, an aggressive star-spanning race.

Rak Arranya passed the power ring and battery onto Taa, giving the Zilliphi the means of defending his world. The rite of succession was complicated by aspects of Taa's society. Decisions were not individually based, they were made by committee.

Even under the fearsome attack of the Barooki, The Many of Zilliph followed their strict moral code. No individual in Zilliph society could have more power than another. The power of the Green Lantern would be harnessed by all or none. It was decided Taa would dispose of the threatening influence of the Green Lantern by throwing it in the acid seas.

Taa realized his world would die if the Many could not take responsibility for their actions. He would need to become an individual to be free to use his strength. He charged the ring against the power battery and recited the oath of the Green Lantern.

The new Green Lantern made quick work of the Barooki attackers. For saving their world, his fellow Zilliphi hailed him as a hero. Taa attempted to explain the role of individuals as the most important part of the whole. Zilliph must be free to utilize the strengths and talents each possessed. The Zilliphi didn't understand the concept. They proclaimed Taa the King of Zilliph.

As the years went on, the world of The Many had changed. Instead of the Hall of The Many, decisions were made by The One, the Green Lantern Taa, much to Taa's dismay. - Green Lantern Annual Vol. 3 #5

Taa has resisted this role, and left his homeworld, opting to spend more time on Oa. In response, the Many of Zilliph have sent space probes to find their reluctant king.

GLCWP NOTE

I didn't notice until I was just about finished with this entry, but the Zilliphi "hands" are comprised of only one finger. The "Dr. Seuss" flavor of the Zilliphi society was a nice touch.

The story of Taa was part of DC's 1996 Annuals featuring "Legends of the Dead Earth." The 1996 Annuals told stand alone tales set thousands of years in the future, dealing with the legends of the DC Universe’s famous heroes, at least at the time of publication. Back in 1996, Kyle Rayner was the last of the Green Lanterns, and though presented as a possible future, the stories in the Green Lantern Annual were actually inventory stories from the defunct Green Lantern Corps Quartely title.

Taa and Rak Arranya were folded into the current DC Universe in 2008's Green Lantern/Sinestro Corps Secret Files #1.
