HISTORY

In the late 20th Century, one of Earth's most powerful men, Lex Luthor, believed it was his destiny to rule the world. He sought to turn people's opinions against metahumans, and openly confronted those heroes who opposed his regime. Batman challenged Luthor after an attempt to discredit the metahumans and struck at self proclaimed conqueror, paralyzing him. In the ensuing conflict, Luthor's army destroyed Batman and the Justice League, overwhelming the metahumans by sheer numbers.

Once Luthor's true nature had been revealed, the population turned against him and he disappeared from public view. In retaliation, Luthor tried to destroy the Earth while he protected his body within machinery. World War III decimated the Earth, and the Science Police was created in its wake. The construction of the super computer known as Universo was all part of Luthor's carefully designed plan which spanned the centuries. He would spend the time searching for immortality. Sadly, the computer program which took over for him believed it was Luthor, while his true body, long forgotten, died in isolation. -Superboy's Legion #2

In 2987, industrialist R. J. Brande found the birthing matrix of the last son of the doomed planet Krypton. The spacecraft had been on a course for Earth in the late 20th Century when it crashed into one of the field's asteroids. Brande took the baby home to Earth and raised the last Kryptonian as his son. As the baby grew to become a teenager, the Science Police monitored "Superboy" for Luthor.

In the early 31st Century, Luthor used the super powered criminals known as the Fatal Five to conduct covert experiments on several powerful races, preparing for the his planned possession of Superboy's body when it reached maturity.

On Daxam, cytoplasmic experiments proved too painful for even that race. Daxam, Xanthu, and Ghek were all worlds outside of the United Planets space, and all were destroyed in what appeared to be natural occurrences to cover up Luthor's involvement.

For the legendary Green Lantern Corps, the destruction of Daxam led into the Sinestro War and both events lowered the already waning numbers. The Corps took it upon themselves to protect the worlds outside of the United Planets' protectorate.

Talu-Katu was one of these ring wielders. It was during a rescue mission to stop the Khunds from smuggling endangered Xenoids across the galaxy that Talu-Katu met Superboy. Focusing on a number of Khunds firing upon him from their ship, Talu-Katu failed to notice a lone Khund about to deliver a fatal blow from behind. Superboy protected the aging Green Lantern, allowing the Emerald Warrior to complete his task. -Superboy's Legion #1

The Green Lantern left an impression on Superboy, inspiring him to create a Legion of Super-Heroes. These young heroes from many worlds and species were able to uncover Luthor's millennium old plans of conquest and stop him from gaining absolute power at the expense of the planet Colu. -Superboy's Legion #1-2

GLCWP NOTE

The flashbacks to the 20th Century don't show any of the Green Lanterns as members of that era's Justice League, so I'll assume there wasn't one.

Even though they were surely throwaway lines, I'd love to have more explanation regarding "...the annihilation of the planet Daxam and the subsequent Sinestro War."
