HISTORY

Thanatos was the name of a seemingly fictional monster used by a crime syndicate as a means to brainwash Aquaman and several other people, and turn them into criminal zombies.

Years later, it was revealed that Thanatos was in fact the quite real, extra-dimensional villain responsible for the brainwashing. Dressed in Aquaman's old blue costume, Thanatos returned and menaced Aquaman in his dreams. -Aquaman Vol. 4 #6

Still later, it was revealed that Thanatos was behind the abduction and brainwashing of Aquaman's wife Mera.

After a last battle with Aquaman, Thanatos fled the scene, only to be killed by the Neron-powered super-villain Major Disaster, who believed Thanatos to be Aquaman. -Aquaman Vol. 5 #14
