HISTORY

On an elseworld Earth where Great Britain and the rest of Europe fell before the military might of Nazi Germany, the gods and goddesses of ancient Greece still secretly played in the affairs of mortals.

On this Earth Kal-El, last son of Krypton arrived on Earth in the early 20th Century and debuted as Superman in 1938. Despite the vast powers at his command, the Man of Steel did not interfere with the outcome of the Second World War. Over the next five decades Germany was locked in a cold war with the United States of America. - Superman/Wonder Woman: Whom Gods Destroy #1

In October 1962, Superman discovered evidence of the Nazi atrocities. He unearthed the concentration camp at Auschwitz, one of many camps used by the Nazis in their genocidal "Final Solution." Germany had erased the camps from their maps and history books, thinking they could bury their past crimes from twenty years earlier beneath one hundred feet of earth. Superman had believed the best of Germany, even though they were America's enemies he had not believed they were capable of genocide. Despite this knowledge of past crimes there was nothing more the Man of Steel could do.

In response to the obvious threat posed to them by the Man of Steel, Germany would go on to develop an antimatter bomb, specifically designed to eliminate Superman. The bomb was dropped on Superman's hometown of Metropolis on November 22, 1963. Twenty-million people were killed instantly, including First Lady Selina Kyle, wife of then-President Bruce Wayne. The fireball left a crater twenty miles wide but unlike atomic weapons did not leave the area irradiated. - Superman/Wonder Woman: Whom Gods Destroy #2-4

Berlin told the League of Nations they were prepared to destroy the entire world. President Bruce Wayne issued orders to take retaliation on Germany with the thermonuclear bombardment of Europe. Superman stopped him. The Reich was trying to kill Superman, Metropolis was targeted as it was his hometown and therefore the most likely place to find him. In order to save the world, Superman agreed to withdraw from the world stage. The Nazi agreed to put an end to overt military aggression. - Superman/Wonder Woman: Whom Gods Destroy #2

Some thirty years later, Hal Jordan was the forty-second President of the United States of America. Former President Wayne had become the Chief Justice. Oliver Queen, one of Jordan's closest friends, became the US ambassador to Germany.

By September 1996, the world was on the brink of war once more. Zeus and Hera argued whether reason or passion ruled mortal souls. The Pantheon was split in two, with some Olympians believing they should recede from human affairs while the others wanted to rule mortals as they had in ancient times. A faction of the Pantheon granted reporter Lois Lane superhuman powers. Lane, later to be known as Wonder Woman, striking Nazi military sites. Germany was ready to invoke the "Superman Protocols," seeing this as an invasion from an American superhuman.

As reported by Barbara Gordon, director of Central Intelligence, when the deterioration of events in Europe began to escalate, the President boarded Air Force One, which was then designated "Looking Glass" the airborne supreme command headquarters. Air Force One was attacked shortly after takeoff from Andrews Air Force base. Onboard video from the jet showed President Jordan died defending his Carol Ferris from murderous harpies sent by the Pantheon. Air Force One crashed into the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. There were no survivors.

Jordan's Vice President, Jane Shepard, was sworn in by Chief Justice Bruce Wayne later that evening. It was Lana Lang, now possessing the powers of an oracle that persuaded the new President to hold off a nuclear exchange with Germany so that Superman could act. Between Superman and Wonder Woman the gods of the Pantheon were forced to remove themselves from human affairs. The brush with possible annihilation brought Berlin and Washington to the treaty table. - Superman/Wonder Woman: Whom Gods Destroy #4
