HISTORY

Originally a Spanish fort, Key Mordaz was one of the most remote of the Florida Keys. In 1861 it was converted into a prison by the Confederate States of America. After Appomattox it was taken over by the Union and served as part of the Federal prison system until decommissioned in the 1960s and abandoned.

Decades later, it was sold to the private sector, coming into the possession of Niles Caulder, who utilized the property for scientific experiments and more notably as the headquarters for the Doom Patrol.
