HISTORY

Without evidence to the contrary, it appears the orange light of avarice was the second light of the emotional spectrum to be harnessed after the Guardians of the Universe tapped into the green light of willpower.

The orange light is held within a Central Power Battery, roughly the size of a standard Green Lantern power battery. It is believed but not confirmed that the emotional entity of avarice resides within the orange battery. The battery was kept in a temple beneath the surface of Okaara in the Vega System in sector 2828. It is not known who created the battery or temple, or more importantly why it was left there.

Some three billion years ago, a five member group of thieves raided Maltus taking priceless artifacts. The Manhunters were quickly dispatched, but only caught one of the thieves. The remaining four thieves realized they had parts of an ancient map once belonging to Krona which told of a treasure all would want. The map led the foursome to Okaara, and three lived long enough to enter the temple. All three seized the orange lantern, fighting for possession of the light.

The Guardians and their Manhunters pursued, one of the guild fell as did many Guardians and Manhunters. Ultimately, the Guardians did not want the orange lantern. They wanted a relic taken from Maltus, a box containing the fear entity Parallax. The Guardians made a pact, noninterference so long as the orange light remained within the Vega system and kept by only one of the guild. In the end, the sole possessor of the orange light was Larfleeze. Green Lantern Vol. 4 #41

Many beings came either searching for the orange light or simply were foolhardy enough to stray close enough to Larfleeze to provoke his wrath when he felt his treasures were threatened. The self-proclaimed hunger god Blume of Blobba or the simple cleaner slug Glomulus of Poppo were two such victims of Larfleeze's avarice. They, among many others, were consumed by the orange light constructs. Their identities were stolen, and then replicated as constructs in the Orange Lantern Corps themselves. - Green Lantern Vol. 4 #

Over the millennia after their confrontation with Larfleeze, the Guardians would see the rebellion of the Manhunters and the rise of the Green Lantern Corps. The Vega system was declared off limits to the Corps; the reason given was a pact with the Psions, a species of Maltusian lizards the Guardians had experimented on which had grown to sentience. Aside from the selection of a Green Lantern from the Vegan system, Alisand'r of Tamaran, the Green Lanterns left Vega for billions of years. Recent events saw members of the Green Lantern Corps briefly entering Vega during a battle with the Spider Guild, and later in pursuit of soldiers of the Sinestro Corps. - Omega Men Vol. 1 #30, Green Lantern 80-Page Giant #3, Green Lantern Corps: Recharge #1- 5, Green Lantern Corps Vol. 2 #

Larfleeze ignored the brief presence of the Green Lantern Corps, but his demeanor changed when the Controllers sought out the orange light. Despite the power they wielded, the five Controllers were easily overcome by the Orange Lantern Corps. When Green Lantern Stel pursued the Sinestro Corps Soldier 2825 to the Vega system, both ring wielders found themselves under attack by Orange Lantern Blume. The Sinestro Corps soldier was consumed, while Stel was brutally attacked and branded. His broken body was sent back to Oa as a warning.

The Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps stormed the Vega system, and went after Larfleeze on Okaara. Green Lantern Gretti was slain by the Orange Lanterns, and in turn became one of their Corps. Ultimately, the Guardians had to once more barter for peace as there was no way they could defeat the more powerful Orange Lantern. Instead, they offered the location of something Larfleeze desperately wanted, the homeworld of the Blue Lantern Corps on planet Odym so he could take the blue power ring and Blue Lantern Central Power Battery, thereby pitting two "threats" to the Guardians against each other.
