HISTORY

In Greek mythology, the Nereids are the female spirits of the sea, the fifty daughters of the ancient sea deities Nereus and Doris. These benevolent spirits serve as the attendants of the Olympian god Poseidon. They have "cousins" in the form of the other breed of salt water nymphs called the Oceanides, and their sweetwater equivalents are known as the Naiads. These three kinds of water nymphs all belong to the bigger family of the Nymphs of Nature.

Few of the Nereids are known individually by name, but one of them is Panopea, who once had an encounter with a young Princess Diana of Themyscira. One of the more active of the Nereids is Thetis, the mother of Achilles, the near-invulnerable hero of Antiquity. Thetis would save children (girls) lost at sea and bring them to Themyscira, the island of the Amazons. The Amazons would then implant a wish to promote peace in the child and then "send the child forth" into the world. Thetis would bring the child back in time to the moment when it was lost.

POWERS AND WEAPONS

The Nereids are generally benevolent sea nymphs who are said to help sailors in need. They possess healing powers and once healed the wounds of Wonder Woman after her first battle with the war god Ares.

The Nereids are often intangible and barely visible water forms, but they can take on physical forms when needed.
