Following the exile of Rami for the creation of the Phantom Ring, another yet-unidentified member of the Guardians of the Universe also attempted to harness the full emotional spectrum. Though eager, this Guardian did not have the talents of Rami and supplemented science with sorcery, resulting in the Universal Ring. Though their were some similarities between the two rings, the Universal Ring was, in some sense, alive. It was driven to create more of itself and to pacify. Like the Phantom Ring, it could not be destroyed and instead the Guardians chose to hide the ring on a version of Earth, locked in a time loop and separated from the rest of Hypertime.
It could have remained there indefinitely but for the machinations of Sinestro. The former Green Lantern rounded up representatives from each of the Corps; Bleez, Larfleeze, Arkillo, G'Nort; Saint Walker, Munk and Fatality and sacrificed their lives to grant him access to the ring.
