HISTORY

In times past, the Guardians of the Universe had created the Manhunters to bring justice to the stars. When the Manhunters failed, the Guardians formed the Green Lantern Corps. Each group had inherent strengths and weaknesses, but the Green Lantern Corps was the more successful of the two.

In more recent times, the Guardians have had to deal with renegade Green Lanterns, the most famous being Sinestro of Korugar. The robotic Fists of the Guardians were sent to arrest Sinestro, but as of this writing there have not been any other circumstances where they were pressed into service.[1]

When the Green Lantern Corps was reborn following Green Lantern's return and the defeat of Parallax, Sinestro also returned. The renegade Green Lantern recruited thousands of the most fearsome villains across the universe into his own Sinestro Corps. This in turn led to the Guardians of the Universe to rewrite the Book of Oa, with ten new laws. The first law allowed lethal force against the Sinestro Corps, the second law expanding lethal force against all enemies of the Green Lantern Corps.[2]

To ensure the new laws would be obeyed, including the remaining eight yet to be introduced, the Guardians of the Universe created the Alpha-Lanterns. The Alpha-Lanterns scanned the Green Lantern Corps for candidates with the ability to enforce justice. The Alpha-Lanterns would patrol their sector as well as investigate potentially renegade behavior within the Corps. The Guardians originally planned for six select members of the Green Lantern Corps to accept the extended duty, but Green Lantern John Stewart declined, at least until he had more information. The other five candidates, Chaselon, Green Man of Uxor, Boodikka, Varix, and Kraken agreed without question. The lantern intended for John Stewart scanned the rest of the Green Lantern Corps for a candidate. As of this writing the candidate is not yet known.

Those that accepted were taken for "cosmic surgery" to transform them into the Alpha-Lanterns. The surgery appeared particularly brutal, as their bodies were cut apart and power batteries were placed into their chests. The minds of the Alpha-Lanterns would be mainlined directly to the Book of Oa. As their bodies were linked directly to the Central Power Battery, there would be no need to recharge the power rings, or sleep. Their faces resembled the Manhunters, in that the facial plate would fold open, showing a power skull beneath which could drain the energy of a Green Lantern's power ring.[3]

The Alpha-Lanterns were present at the trial of the Green Lantern of Sector 112. Laira of Jayd was charged with the murder of Sinestro Corps member 2814, Amon Sur of Ungara. It was fellow "Lost Lantern" Alpha-Lantern Boodikka who rendered the judgement and carried out the sentence, expulsion from the Green Lantern Corps.[4]

Alpha-Lantern Boodikka has reprimanded Green Lantern Harvid of Sector 2937 and earned her second power ring during the investigation of her sister and new sector partner Zale of Bellatrix.[5]

The so-called Final Crisis saw the Alpha-Lanterns investigate an attack on Lantern John Stewart which resulted in the trial of Hal Jordan. It was discovered Alpha-Lantern Kraken had been taken over by the New God of Apokolips Granny Goodness. Kraken's current status is unknown.

Alpha-Lantern Chaselon lost his life after executing Red Lantern Vice. His narrow-minded focus on the law caused him the eliminate the best weapon the Green Lanterns had against the Black Lantern Corps. The so-called Black Lantern Corphans tore the Alpha-Lantern power battery out of Chaselon's body, killing him.

Following the Blackest Night, the Alpha-Lanterns have forcibly requisitioning Green Lanterns to join their ranks. Thus far, Sector 743 Lanterns Hraalkar and Glibberquip are the first victims. Other Alpha-Lanterns such as Relok Hag and Horoq Nnot were also added.[6]
